A service year becomes a common expectation and common opportunity, and within a generation, every year, one million young Americans engage in a service year, solving important problems while transforming their own lives.

Why Now: Broken Citizenship and Pressing Challenges

Today, the need for a common experience of citizenship in our country is more poignant than ever. We are drifting apart. Contrary to the illusion of constant connectivity, Americans are isolated from one another—geographically, ethnically, economically, religiously, and culturally. Traditional forms of civic participation have atrophied. Many Americans’ sole contribution to the country is through paying taxes—not nearly enough to bind people to their communities. Only one in three eligible voters turned out in the last election. Less than one percent of Americans serve in the military. There’s a chance—right now—to inspire a renewed sense of citizenship capable of solving our biggest challenges and creating the leaders our nation needs.

Neither the idea of national service nor our vision are new, but this moment in time tells us they are both deeply needed and never before more achievable.    


Position Description

In order to reach our north star of one million service years annually, we need a robust growth team to help organizations deliver quality programs more consistently and move rapidly from startup to stability and scale is imperative to growth.  The Associate, Growth is a critical member of this team - from helping to design growth strategy, to putting in place systems to operationalize that strategy, and increasingly, taking on leading components of that strategy themself. Additionally, the Associate, Growth helps connect the dots between growth and other aspects of the larger organizational strategy. The Associate, Growth is a foundational member of the team and is expected to have general knowledge of all of the areas of our work.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to all of the growth team’s KPIs for growth, place-based strategies, and organizational learning
  • Develop high-quality learning resources and materials
  • Conduct research on a variety of topics and market trends to help inform growth strategy
  • Serve as team lead for Salesforce and data management
  • Plan and execute high level meetings and convenings
  • Design  external facing content for large audiences
  • Track activities against the growth plan, schedule, and other deliverables.
  • Develop and create reports on SYA’s larger key performance indicators as they relate to growth and identify useful stats on growth team activities
  • Support coordination of the growth team goals/activities across the other Service Year Alliance teams to ensure strong collaboration and communication
  • Other duties as assigned


  • 2-4 years professional experience working in a support capacity
  • Close attention to detail and accuracy; personal initiative; reliability, flexibility and follow-up
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, time management skills, and ability to juggle multiple projects at once
  • Strong proficiency with standard office software and demonstrated skill with web research tools including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Salesforce and databases
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in multi-faceted, team-oriented environment
  • Deep belief in service years to tackle our most pressing challenges, transform the lives of those who service, and change the course of our country
  • Humble leader with tremendous professional resolve
  • Demonstrable ability and comfort to interact with people at all levels and types of organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to be a productive member of a team of people at work, respecting differences while working toward shared goals, comfort with periods of ambiguity, and constructive participation in ongoing organizational development
